When you’re a fan of air quality, it’s easy to forget about the benefits of awns.
Awnings are often made of polycarbonate, which has a high water content and is not as lightweight as it is when made of wood.
They’re often also cheaper to manufacture and can be used to replace roofing and other building materials, which in turn can reduce the amount of energy required to run the building.
But if you’re looking to save money, awners can also help reduce the carbon footprint of your home.
“Awning materials are usually made from recycled materials and materials with a good carbon footprint, which means they are more sustainable,” says Roberta Varela, an energy sustainability consultant at McKinsey & Company.
“It’s one of the best ways to reduce the impact of greenhouse gases.
The more materials you use, the more you reduce the emissions.”
In Australia, the industry is growing and the Australian Building and Construction Commission (ABCC) is encouraging the industry to adopt a greener approach.
The ABCC launched its Smart Energy Awning (SAA) program in December 2016, which aims to reduce energy consumption, increase air pollution and reduce CO2 emissions from the construction industry by using recycled materials to build and maintain structures.
In a recent study, researchers at Melbourne’s University of Melbourne found that SAA buildings reduced energy use by an average of 6.5% compared to conventional buildings.
The study also found that the use of recycled materials was more efficient than conventional building materials.
“When we are using recycled material, it gives us an additional energy savings, which can be applied to other buildings that are on the same site,” says Andrew White, an ABCC spokesman.
“The idea is to build a structure with a higher quality of life, and when we have a lot of buildings on the site, it makes a big difference to the overall health of the site.”
The ABC is currently developing its Smart Awner Program to see if this can be expanded to include other types of structures, including residential.
But while there are several other building design trends in Australia, such as retrofitting existing buildings to reduce carbon emissions, it is the emergence of SAA that is the most exciting, says Vareba.
“There’s been a lot more interest in using recycled building materials in building,” she says.
